NAVI CALLISTO
And at the head of it all, is Navi Callisto, the vivacious protagonist of Spylights. Dynamic, strong willed, beautiful, and just the right amount of insane; there is nobody in the whole universe quite like Navi. Born into the most famous family of super spies in the entire galaxy, despite being heavily trained and highly skilled in anything physical, Navi is actually not very good at her job. Her naturally rebellious and outgoing personality often leads to more than one disaster. Hence the reason her parents decided to ship her off to Earth for some “serious straightening out”.
However, despite seeming naïve and oblivious, in reality, Navi is incredibly clever and is always one step ahead of her opponent. Although she is fairly independent, Navi is fiercely loyal to those she loves and would do anything for them. She can be an effective leader when she needs to be and knows when to be serious if the situation is dire. Navi is a tough 6000 year old teenager, who makes a lot of mistakes, but always ends up changing for the better and even manages to teach a few of her own lessons as well. Once hailed Galaxy Magazine’s “Most Influential and Beautiful Callisto of All Time,” they weren’t lying when they said that anybody would be lucky to have a close relationship with Navi Callisto. Someone with a personality as colorful and vivid as Navi’s would have quite the experience with life. To Navi, every day is an adventure as long as you have a Galaxy Orb and a couple of extremely explosive fireworks.
CELESTE
Besides Link, Celeste is Navi’s closest friend. That may have something to do with the fact that Celeste has been bound to Navi since birth as her talking guide cat, but never mind that. Celeste behaves like any other cat; she often sleeps and doesn’t interact with many people outside of whom she has to. However, Celeste is widely regarded as one of the wisest beings in the universe. If Navi needs advice, its Celeste she turns to for it and eventually, Link starts to do the same.
While by no means, particularly powerful in any way, Celeste still is a valuable member of Link and Navi’s little team and helps through as many situations as she’s able without getting her tail stepped on. She knows Navi is a bit of a train wreck at times but also knows that at the end of the day, she always means well.
VIRGO
I mean…it can’t be a TV show by Amy McDonald without a princess. But Virgo happens to be the most anti-princess of all time. She’s rarely seen doing anything princess-y aside from hanging around the castle destroying windows. Navi’s best friend before Link came into the picture; Virgo and Navi were inseparable at one point. A less extreme version of Navi, Virgo’s outlook on life has more so to do with a lack of care rather than just pointless destruction. She’s a chill, nonchalant kind of person who was by Navi’s side during her most…experimental phase.
Despite being essentially “replaced” by Link, though she still means a lot to Navi, Virgo has no bad blood against him. In fact, she even helps Navi shield Link from her psychotic brother from time to time. Despite recognizing Aries’ insanity, Virgo still loves her brother as much as Aries loves her (or as close to love as Aries can get). However, while she does make bad choices, Virgo isn’t stupid. She knows her limits as well as others it’s just a matter of whether or not she cares to respect those limits.
LINK CORNELL
Link Cornell is the duerotagonist (it sounds bad but it actually just means the second protagonist) of Spylights. While not necessarily the main character, Link does often share the spotlight (spylight?) with Navi. Link is the ideal best friend. Loyal, kind, caring, and willing to do anything for the people he truly loves, as an audience member, one can easily understand why Navi cares about him and why she would be so scared of losing him. 17 years old and probably undeserving of the responsibility given to him, at the start of the series, Link is somewhat indifferent to Navi and her world.
Having been an “all talk and no action” type of person before, it’s understandably a little bit jarring when an alien girl enters his life who almost never gives any warning to what she’s about to do. Nonetheless though, he considers Navi his best friend and would do anything for her so long as it doesn’t put their lives at risk. Though he starts off as timid and a bit cowardly, over time he develops into a strong and confident person, who makes mistakes, but always means well in the end.
Link is the only person in the universe who fully trusts Navi (which…is arguably somewhat of a mistake) but only because he knows that Navi would never let anything happen to him. There is nothing in the universe more important to Navi than Link. The yin to her yang, the two couldn’t be more opposite yet they make the most perfect team imaginable.
BELLATRIX
At first glance, you wouldn’t even realize Bellatrix works for the Callisto family. She’s far too….nervous. That, however, is exactly why she stays behind the scenes, organizing and planning every mission and communicating with each Callisto to make sure the mission goes smoothly. As you can imagine then, Navi is not her favorite person. Bellatrix is quiet, shy, and constantly on edge. Navi is loud, outgoing, and constantly makes rash decisions.
But while Bellatrix isn’t a fan, Navi absolutely adores her. She finds Bella’s anxiousness to be entertaining and values her as a friend and almost mentor. To calm herself down, Bellatrix spends much of her time watching her favorite Taurisian soap operas and listening to some…very interesting music that you wouldn’t expect out of someone like her. Despite her annoyance with Navi, Bellatrix does recognize Navi’s importance to not only the organization, but to the universe.
ARIES
The prince and heir to the throne of Capricorn, a powerful planet located in the same galaxy as Taurus, Aries and his twin sister Virgo have known the Callisto family for years. Handsome on the outside….ehhhh not so much on the inside. Aries has been hopelessly in love with Navi since they were only 300 years old. So much so that he’s willing to do anything for her heart. And that includes getting rid of anything that gets in his way. Aries is driven by two emotions: love and hatred. Love for the untouchable Navi Callisto and red hot hatred for her hoodie wearing best friend, Link, who he views as a threat.
Unsurprisingly, Navi wants absolutely nothing to do with Aries. Link, wants to do nothing but hide from Aries and his anger. Aries and Navi have quite the history and it’s unclear whether or not anything ever happened between them. All we know is that Aries’ unhealthy obsession with her has led him to do some pretty tragic things. Things that will make you pity the poor prince rather than despise him.
